Hurricane Preparation/Evacuations
Hurricane season is without a doubt the most frenetic time for our staff. When the television weathermen start projecting a potential hit for our area, even when there is no actual hurricane landfall, we must ensure that each household is prepared with enough medication, food, water, candles, flashlights, charged cell phone batteries etc. to make it through an eight day period without access to those items.
In preparation of a hurricane hitting our area, we make plans to evacuate the clients that are at greater risk to temporarily move them to a hotel. Senior Solutions staff and aides will accompany the client during their stay at the hotel.
When the worst clears we’re out foraging for hot food, sandwiches, ice and whatever we need to make it through. Afterwards staff members must check out residences to make sure it’s OK to return. Our last storm caused power outages which translates to the elevators not working, not being able to power oxygen units, and the inability to refrigerate and prepare food. Our staff will immediately visit the home to assess it prior to sending the client home to prevent these possible problems.
It is easy to lose track of family members during these kinds of events. We try and contact each and every family to let them know where we’ll be riding out the storm. Distant family members are assured that someone is there to watch over their relatives.
